We have been talking (arguing) about moving to Utah since before we got married. I could write forever about all our reasons to stay in California verses moving to Utah. But I don't have that kind of time--I'm in the middle of a move! Suffice it to say it will be a bittersweet move--we love California, we have fantastic friends and family here. We also have fantastic friends and family in Utah, and it's much more affordable to buy a home and work and live there. So we are going to give it a try.
Tyler got a new job in February. He's been working remotely and can continue to work from anywhere, so that is what made this possible. We had a really hard time finding a house. We made two other offers on homes that didn't work out. When the second one fell through, we dropped everything and drove to Utah the next day. The kids missed the last week of school. We thought we'd stay in my parents' basement for a week and find something before interest rates skyrocketed.
Due to a combination of factors including very few homes on the market in the area we wanted and our (Tyler's) extreme picky-ness, that week turned into a month. I felt like Uncle Eddie and my mom (bless her heart) kept on asking me "Now when is it that you are leaving again?"
(She and my dad were very, very patient--but we did stay a loooong time.)
Finally one blessed Saturday, I got an email from Zillow saying this house came on the market. It wasn't on the other home sites yet.
My living room (staged furniture--wish it was mine.)
My realtor was out of town, but I called his partner and asked him to get us in that day because the good houses were selling really fast. We saw this house right after a very depressing visit to one of the other homes we'd put an offer on. (The owners decided not to sell, but kept telling us that they might sell someday as they kept raising the price.) Tyler was Grumpy-McGrumperson as we started looking at our new house. I knew in about 25 seconds that this was MY house, and I pointed my finger in Tyler's face and hissed at him that we were buying this house so he had better put a smile on his face and love it. He came around pretty quick.
This will be Tyler's office.
Meanwhile another man came sniffing around the house. He explained that his million dollar home was just too much space now and he was looking to downsize, possibly to this house. I told him that I loved this home, that I was raising my family here, and that he could take his millions and go buy up any other house he wanted, but this one was mine! He was nice (and probably a little taken aback) and told me that if I liked it so much he wouldn't try to outbid me--he would have had to add a boat garage anyway.
The yard needs some work--Tyler has big plans for it.
We made an offer on the spot, then sweated all weekend til it was accepted on Monday. At long last we piled back into Goldfinger to come home and try to do a million things--we are working on a bucket list of favorite activities in California, we are packing, I'm trying to lose 20 pounds this month, I need to potty train Bennett (not happening), I want to spend lots of time with friends, we are dealing with all the details of buying a house and switching our life, schools, etc., and we are trying to make a lot of decisions about appliances, furniture and the like for our new home.
My new washer and dryer!
It's overwhelming but really fun too--except the losing 20 pounds part. I hate not eating whatever I want. But that's a post for another day.
